I am an American tango teacher who lives in Rome…I am originally from Austin, Texas where for many years I was a businessman and entrepreneur. In 1997 I did a crazy thing; I followed my dream and moved to Florence, Italy which had been my dream. My friends told me it was a crazy thing to do as I had never been in Italy, did not know anyone, had no money and did not speak the language…I WAS 47 YEARS OLD….well this opened the door to incredible adventures..it has been a fantastic life; BIGGER THAN MY DREAMS.
I now live in Rome where I teach tango using Zen concepts…it is my passion and I try to do it with an “American” approach…with professionalism… I love Italy because it is magical; the history, the art, the food, the wine, the coffee and the women are the best….human interaction is very important here. I have a degree in Philosophy and have owned a number of small businesses. I am very curious about the world and read alot. I am a video producer as well and a fanatic about physical fitness.
I guess my biggest passion is to understand understanding; what’s it all about? What is life and love and pain and arriving and dying all about…and what about parallel universes and Nietzsche and Schopenhauer’s prescription of art as the palliative of life…and what about the Buddha’s enlightment under that tree…and what about Mother Teresa’s pure love?

Hello Oscar,
I totally get how all this happened to you. In a parallel universe I would have done the same thing. Until I get to this point in my life, do you ever hold workshops or intensives? I have started up a small tango community in Newport RI (despite being a beginner when I did it!) and imagine that I will tango until I drop. Please send information on your classes/workshops -
Besos!

Ci sono pochissime persone che quando attraversano il nostro cammino di vita suscitano un’immediato “terremoto” di simpatia, di sincero affetto e per le quali apriresti istintivamente le braccia …Oscar! Grazie per questa emozione.

Oscar – I am in awe of what you’ve done the decisions you’ve made and the “steps” you have taken. Whenever I hesitate, doubt myself or think that I can’t…I reread your “About” and know that I can.
Thank you for your encouragement and your kind words. As you can see from my most recent post, it’s only a matter of time before we meet.
Grazie Caro…

Cafe, you almost made me cry…I was so moved by your comment..I am humbled…my soul is reduced to being a simple flower growing on the edge of some alphalt road
I saw a poster in Rome advertising your tango class on Monday nights. Where can I find more information about the class, like costs and such? Thanks!
Hello Oscar, I had to write just because it seemed to be the thing to do. You still have the passion for tango (if not more so) that you exuded during our first lessons here in Austin in 1999 I believe. You taught a few free lessons at a little club off 6th street at La Bodega bar. That small spark started a fire within us that has never been extinguished. We have traveled to BA 8 times for intensive work; started a festival here(Austin Spring Tango Festival 8 coming up), supported all students and local teachers, and generally have helped turn our community of maybe 10 into hundreds. It was due in no small part to your passionate and kind introduction to the dance and culture. I have just lost Margaret, my soulmate, in June to cancer. Without this wonderful outlet to share and love and grow, I would be a leaky ship without an anchor. I will now throw myself into the dance with more understanding of what is important in life, what tango can teach us all if we just listen, the music and the words are the poetry of life. Thanks again for our spark. Vance Rigtmire
